Oregon Computer Consultants Association: CES 2013 / New Technology

OCCA member George Shubin will review the new technology presented at the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The show is the world's largest convention of suppliers of all types of electronics products for home and business. George will be reporting on a wide variety of electronic goodies.

So, join us and let's kick off the new year with a fun and informative meeting--having a look at some cool tools and toys that are scheduled to come our way soon.

Presented by George Shubin is an custom software developer and is the owner of dX Software Systems. He has been working with computers since 1968. Starting as a lowly computer operator at a mainframe installation, sorting punched cards and managing punched paper tape libraries, George has worked as programmer, IT Department manager, Sales manager, and computer consultant, and has designed and developed a wide variety of applications for many types of businesses.

In addition to being a long-time member of the OCCA, George is a current Board Member and former president of the OCCA.

Dave Shinsel will provide an overview of available depth sensors, and a deep-dive on Intel’s RealSense depth sensors, including a new sensor that adds visual SLAM capability. He will discuss how these sensors work in conjunction with Computer Vision technologies for various robotics applications, including object avoidance, person interaction, object recognition and localization, and SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping). Further the talk will cover how to access these capabilities via their ROS wrappers.

Dave Shinsel is the Lead Robotics Architect in Intel’s Perceptual Computing Group. He has an extensive background in all levels of robotics, with particular focus on vision and sensing technologies. Prior to this role, Dave was the Director of the Intel® RealSense SDK, created and led the Intel® Graphics Performance Analyzers, and led development of the graphics drivers for the Apple MacBook* Air. In his “spare time,” Dave has been building robots for fifteen years. He has received a "Backyard Genius Award" from Popular Mechanics magazine, won a number of robot competitions, and competed on TV in the Syfy Channel’s Robot Combat League, where he and his daughter (also an engineer at Intel) won the $100,000 grand prize with their 7 foot, 9 inches tall, fighting robot, "Crash." Dave is well known in the Maker community for his sophisticated 4 foot tall humanoid robot, Loki.

Join us at the Ruby Receptionists office in Portland. The agenda is to help us further ground this new group in our third hosted meeting, organized by Jean Richardson.

PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources, and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.

Trans and non-binary people are always welcome at our events.

Acquiring customers for our SaaS companies is arguably one of the most difficult challenges we face. We need to figure it out what works and what doesn't work, and we need to do it before the money runs out.

In this Meetup we'll discuss:

• The marketing strategies that are working for us, and the ones that didn't.

• Lessons we learned taking our products to market.

• Paid vs organic marketing channels: which ones are best for every stage of growth.

We're all faced with the challenge of creating an awesome software product for our customers. A big part of this is having a highly functional software development team.  

In this Meetup we'll discuss:

• When to develop software in-house versus outsourcing or partnering with another software platform. Some SaaS companies utilize a mix of in-house and outsourced developers. We'll brainstorm various possible approaches.

• How do you train new developers?  What approaches have been successful and what has been a dismal failure? - Does it make sense to hire senior developers only or a mix of junior and senior developers?

• Team / project organization - Do you do daily standups? How do your organize sprints? How are deadlines established and by whom? Is your team in the same office or are some remote? What tools do you use (Slack, Trello, etc.)? With all of the bugs, feature requests, UI overhauls, when do you ship updates to the product?

• Communication and transparency - How do you speak to the rest of the team in a language everyone understands? Do you hold weekly/bi-weekly meetings to announce progress? How do you showcase new features to clients?

Can Virtual Reality improve pain for post-surgery cancer patients?

The epidemic of opioid addiction is a well-documented consequence of our approach to treating pain. As part of Providence Health & Services’ work in the research and development of alternatives to opioids, a team set out to test the effectiveness of Virtual Reality as a pain treatment for gastrointestinal malignancy​ surgery patients.

Daren is a Product Manager with Ambulatory Services at Providence Health & Services in Portland where he collaborates with clinical experts in sleep disorders, sports medicine, diabetes, physical therapy and chronic pain to develop new offerings and improve existing services.​

Raina is a clinical research supervisor at Providence Cancer Institute. She has a BS in Chemistry from Pacific University and an MS in Pharmaceutical Science from the University of British Columbia.​

This meetup is for intermediate/advanced machine learning engineers (MLE). We will be covering using an NLP framework for text/OCR extraction from documents/images, text preparation and data extraction. The code along will be in Python.

This should be useful if you are, or plan to, work with thousands to millions of PDF documents, camera captured images containing text, and facsimile messages.

About the Speaker: Andrew Ferlitsch has a Masters Degree in Artificial Intelligence, and is a former Principal Research Scientist for Sharp Corporation with 115 issued US patents. Andrew was ranked #1 continuously for 2 years in the StackOverflow category for Open Data (Data Engineering). He is the founder of the shareware product Winnex and the open source project OpenGeoCode. Andrew has ran a number of volunteer organizations in Portland, including a local tech incubator (NW Startups), the Portland Data Science Group, and oversaw running an international based NGO in Yemen. Currently Andrew is freelancing as a Data Scientist/Consultant, specializing in Natural Language Processing and Computer Vision in the Health and Life Sciences.

Amplified, an experience design and technology innovation studio in Portland focused on imagining the communities of the future, is launching a new series called “Placemaking in the Digital Age” to galvanize a community around this emerging design discipline. In this series, we will discuss how we can build meaningful places where digital and physical experiences complement each other, examine design processes and methodologies, and examine the nature of design teams that create these experiences.

Join us on Thursday, August 23 as we kick off this series. Gregg Sloan, Founder and Chief Creative Officer and Janani Vasudev, Director of Experience Design at Amplified will introduce the series with a talk about what placemaking is, as well as discuss their work in the area. There is a lot of excitement and hype around Machine Learning and A.I. but not everybody has a good understanding of what the different terms and approaches mean.

This presentation will give you an overview of machine learning, explain how it is different than regular programming and traditional statistics, and provide a suggestions for where it is appropriate and for learning more if it piques your interest.

The Speaker: Julio Barros is a machine learning consultant in Portland, Oregon and has been developing software for over 20 years. He loves all things data, AI/ML, technology, teaching and mentoring. Julio holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Computer Science from GMU and UVA respectively, is active in the community and runs the PDX Clojure, Deep Learning and Probabilistic Programming meetups.

We run a code school. We hear from a lot of people we talk to that they're not sure whether they're interested in a job in the tech field, because they don't know enough about it. Sometimes, they've even been told that "programming is hard to learn".

At The Tech Academy, we work hard to break down the barriers between people and technology. We think that, with the right approach, anyone can learn to code - and whether you end up working in technology or not, the principles behind coding are useful in a lot of areas.

The Tech Academy is offering a free course providing an introduction to Python. Python is a popular programming language for general-purpose programming. It is particularly easy to learn fo those new to coding.

This course is perfect for people with little to no experience in programming who are curious about a career in software development.

In this practical, hands-on class, you'll learn the basics of this popular computer language - and along the way, you should find out for yourself whether technology and coding are something worth looking into a bit more deeply.

The Instructor:
Erik Gross is the co-founder of The Tech Academy, a software developer training school based in Portland, OR. The Tech Academy has helped hundreds of graduates to break into the technology field. Mr. Gross has been a working software developer and consultant for many years, and has developed simple, clear methods for helping nontechnical people genuinely understand technical concepts. He brings an enthusiastic, accessible teaching style to an area of knowledge that all too often leaves people in the dark.

Every year, ChickTech gives 150 local girls the opportunity to attend a weekend long inspiring technology camp. Girls are nominated by their teachers, then surprised with acceptance packets that illuminate their potential. Join a group of ChickTech volunteers in stuffing acceptance packets! In this talk, Tom Sommerville will discuss various materials available across a selection of 3D Printing technologies, their properties, and some of the considerations when selecting the materials for a task. On the second Wednesday of every month at a rotating location, come to the Portland Drupal User Group meetup to talk about Drupal and hear a few presentations.

These meetups are for ALL levels of Drupal users, from those of us who have only briefly heard of it but are interested in learning more to those of us who know a lot of but are always looking to learn more! Come get involved!

If you have heard of PatternLab, you know that it is the de facto standard for creating, sharing and distributing design patterns for front end applications. This should be an interesting session.

The first 30 minutes of the meetup will be socializing and dinner, followed by the two talks in whatever order they would like. If you are hiring or promoting an event, there will be a brief opportunity for announcements.

Take yourself back to 1998, when the first websites were being built. What tool did they use? For many it was a tool like Dreamweaver: expensive, complex, on-premise software. Fast forward to 2018. What do people use now? Tools like Wordpress, Wix, Weebly and Shopify. These tools are cloud-based, pay-as-you-go, and simple yet powerful. Content creation for the 3D web (including AR and VR) is high friction today. Businesses have devices and problems to solve but the content creation tools feel like we’re stuck in the 90’s.

Kyle Roche, GM of AR/VR at Amazon Web Services, will discuss how AWS leverages their cloud offerings to simplify content creation for the 3D web. Amazon Sumerian allows non-3D experts to create AR and VR content using only a web browser. Content can be easily published to end-users who then decide how they want to consume the experience. Sean's been convinced there are better ways to develop applications across the stack for years, and built time-traveling debuggers, interface builders, layout tools, and graphic design tools in his quest to explore the space. His company was the first to deploy ClojureScript's Om library to a production app in early 2014, he helped lay the architecture for CircleCI's open-source frontend app and precursorapp.com, built systems to support tens of millions of dollars in transactions, and most recently founded OneGraph, a single GraphQL endpoint for all your most important APIs.

Hello, this is our monthly informal meetup for the Portland QS community. The idea is for us to get together and talk about what we are working on and learning from our data and self-experiments.

There won't be formal talks, but if you want to show others what you are working on, there will be a projector on hand.

Food and drinks are going to be potluck style. If you can, bring something that you can share with others. It doesn't need to be elaborate. A simple snack is great.
